FOTO8
foto8 magazine and website has been a big influence to my design work and my photographic work for a number of years now. The layouts in the magazine are fine tuned to a clean and powerful perfection. The pages don’t try to be anything more than just the story and the words, and don’t to try employ fancy graphics in order to draw the reader in. I like this because they know that photographs and stories are good enough to not need these fancy graphics to draw people in, but rather a carefully picked establishing image and clean but bold title.

On the first page, I chose to use one of the photographs from the series that really jump out at the viewer, drawing them into the article. I used negative space to highlight the image, and keep the image at a reasonable size, to keep it clean and uncluttered. I really like the font I used for the title, and the words around the opening two pages are spread across the page to keep a nice fluidity.
The second two pages were very easy to lay out as I chose to use only three images. I chose to do this because, it makes the three chosen images seem stronger and the pages are less cluttered and look more organized with less images to look at. The overall layout of the pages are very simple, clean and easy to view, with no fancy effects which distract from the story and the images.

My second inDesign layout, for my five picture story. Again I have usued negative space to emphasize the establishing image on the front page, and have used a small and ordinary font to set the mood for the story and not distract from establishing image. By-line is present underneath the title so it is seen straight after reading the title and caption is to the left spreading the words out across the two pages.
The second double page, is very simple, but trying to fit 4 images into two pages proved hard to make look appealing. I like the simplicity of the image layout, and I made one of the stronger images bigger, to hit the reader straight away.

Here we have it, the final layout for my interview magazine spread. I didn’t really do much experimenting with ideas for layouts for this one because I just knew that I wanted a landscape orientated portrait in the centre of a doubt page spread with the text around it. I haven’t quite decided on a title yet though…
